Tillerson says unilateral sanctions against Russia inefficient

WASHINGTON, Jun 14 (PRIME) -- The U.S. believes that unilateral restrictions are less efficient than multilateral sanctions, this is why Washington is not toughening its stance against Russia, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Wednesday at a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives.

But forcing allies to take the same position as the U.S. is a challenge, Tillerson said.

In 2014, relations between Russia and the West deteriorated to their worse since the Cold War due to a military conflict in Ukraine. The West introduced sanctions against some Russian individuals and firms and further against the energy and banking sectors. In response, Russia prohibited food imports from some countries, including the U.S., the E.U., Canada, Australia, and Norway.
